Scenario 6

A classroom situation I had was a freshman student who absolutely refused to do anything he did not want to do. The frustrating part was not that he would not participate but that his teachers allowed it to happen because it was better that he was at school than at his home. It was frustrating because (1) the student was not learning and (2) the student obviously had a horrible homelife.

I think that this connects with what we've been learning about in this class. Maybe assigning an alternate assignment that is more interesting to the student's life or hobbies would get him or her more engaged. Or perhaps just explaining the curriculum in relation to the student's life would do the trick.

Students like that seem like they will be the hardest to reach. In my practicum placement I've seen this situation come up over and over again. My student teacher had a away of reaching these students to an extent where they would at least participate during class time. So, the only thing I can suggest is what my teacher did, and thats just show how much you care about the. If they know this, maybe they will start to care about their accomplishments in school. Just know that to these troulbed homelife students, you are probalby the best thing that will happen to them all day. They wont forget that.soccer1

Well for this one I would try to get with the parents of the students, to sit down and think through the situation. If the parents wont get involved then the teacher should take the incentive and ask the student and a guidance officer to sit down and try to hash things out. This way the teacher and the student could maybe come to an understanding for at least thier class.

you can't fix the home life, but you can help with the school part. Plan something fun that the student can learn from and make them want toi be at school. Find out their interests and use that to your advantage because there is always time to save a students academic life. Do your best and get that student more involved through common interests that they like. The other students might not like it at first, but atleast you will be able to get that student back on track!
